Local History of Concord at Brushy Creek
The Concord at Brushy Creek homes for sale in Round Rock are being built near a famous historical site for the state of Texas known as the Kenney Fort. After the Texas Revolution, in the spring of 1838, Dr. Thomas Kenney, Joseph Barnhart and others built Kenney Fort, the first permanent European settlement in Round Rock. The fort was near the banks of Brushy Creek, on the property now known as the Concord at Brushy Creek. The fort consisted of four log cabins with a tall fence protecting a central square of about one-half acre.
At that time Round Rock was part of the wild and dangerous frontier. Alligators filled the creeks and streams of Williamson County, buffalo were plentiful, as were bears and wild mustangs. The area surrounding the Brushy Creek had been inhabited by humans for thousands of years. When the first Europeans arrived, attacks by Native Americans, including the Caddo, Apache, Cherokee, and others, were quite common.
The fort provided a shelter for many of Williamson County’s first residents. Kenney Fort played an important role in the Sante Fe Expedition and the Archives War. Dr. Kenney and his associates were killed while on a hunting expedition on April 6, 1844, possibly by the Caddo tribe, and the fort fell into disrepair and disuse as more European settlers began moving into Williamson County. Only the foundations of the buildings remain. They have been preserved by Meritage Homes in their original location.
