Leander Texas

Welcome to Leander, Texas!

Leander Texas is a quickly growing community located just north of Cedar Park, 26 miles from downtown Austin, but only 10 miles from most of Austin’s growing tech industry. Since 2000, the community has grown from 7,600 residents to over 60,000 in 2020. With the sharply increased demand in housing along the 183/Research Blvd corridor, the city has become a more affordable option with a median age of 30 years old with over 40% the population with a Bachelor’s Degree or higher.

Why is Leander such a Great Place to Live?

Active, Fun, Safe Lifestyle

As a semi-rural suburb, Leander offers quick access to both outdoor and indoor activities. The city manages over 400 acres of  public parkland and miles of trails for hiking and biking – camping, hunting, and fishing are all available. Most Leander residents live within just a few miles of the great entertainment options of Cedar Park including two professional sports teams: the AHL Hockey League Champion Texas Stars, affiliates of the NHL  Texas Stars, affiliates of the NHL Dallas Stars; and NBA G-League Champions, the Austin Spurs – affiliates of the NBA World Champion San Antonio Spurs.  Both the Stars and Spurs play at H-E-B Center, a city-owned multi-purpose venue that holds up to 8,700 guests and hosts more than 130 events per year.

Like most of Central Texas, Leander has been home to people for over 10,000 years. The first Europeans arrived in the 1840’s and settled the town of Bagdad. When the Austin and Northwest Railroad constructed their rail line one mile to the east, most of the residents moved. This new town would be called Leander, named after railroad company official and former Austin mayor the Honorable Leander “Catfish” Brown.

Over the past decade, Leander has committed itself to knowing that change and growth is inevitable, so it matters what you do with it. The civic and business leadership collaborated on the community’s future to create two award-winning land planning initiatives that have provided a framework for sustainable development. Building a community that lives, works and plays together.

Leander has had one of the lowest crime rates for cities of its size in the state, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety’s annual Crime in Texas Report.
