“We really pride ourselves on being good neighbors to the communities that Kalahari calls home,” Nelson said. “When we design our resorts, we stay focused on adding amenities that everyone can experience and enjoy – not only our overnight guests.”
The Round Rock resort marks the company’s first foray into the southern market and fourth Kalahari Resorts and Conventions location, joining successful properties in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin, Sandusky, Ohio, and the Pocono Mountains, Pennsylvania.
Since its inception, Kalahari Resorts and Conventions has been a family owned and operated business. Many Nelson family members work at Kalahari and were on hand for the ceremony.
“We’re delighted to have Kalahari break ground in Round Rock, Texas,” Mayor Craig Morgan said. “This will be an amazing destination for our citizens, as well as families and convention guests from across the state and across the country. We’re proud of the partnership we’ve forged with Kalahari and can’t wait for the grand opening.”

Round Rock One of the Best Cities for Living the American Dream in 2018
Smart Asset has rated Round Rock as one of the Best Cities for Living the American Dream in 2018.
The folks at Smart Asset looked at various factors including homeownership, economic opportunity, diverse communities, affordability, and economic mobility.
Key Take-Aways
Six of 2017’s top 10 Best Cities for Living the American Dream were back again this year. Those repeat cities are: West Valley City, Utah; Midland, Texas; Aurora Illinois; Round Rock, Texas; Aurora, Colorado and Rochester, Minnesota.
The American dream still lives in Texas. Half of the cities ranked in the top 10 are located in Texas. Mid-sized and small Texas cities tend to have affordable homes and plenty of good jobs, driving down the unemployment rate and improving upward economic mobility.
Round Rock Ranked #5
Round Rock has the economic conditions excellent for anyone trying to live the American Dream.
This city has a fairly high upward mobility rate and a low unemployment rate. Overall data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that only 3.1% of residents in Round Rock are unemployed.
In addition to homeownership, affordability, and mobility, Round Rock offers a great lifestyle for with miles of hiking and biking trails, highly rated public schools, parks, and other community amenities.
Round Rock’s Dell Diamond Stars in Fear the Walking Dead
Where Would You Go?
Ever since I started watching The Walking Dead in 2012 (my first episode was the Season 2 Finale), I daydreamed about where I would go during the future zombie apocalypse. Certainly not to the local grocery stores, they would be quickly overrun with looters. Certainly not a public government building, they would be crowded with hungry and unprepared survivors. My neighborhood is actually rather well defended. It is surrounded by water on three sides. It has rows of homes with fences on the fourth side. Maybe I should just hunker down inside the comfort of my own house to wait for the chaos to blow over.
Iconic Dell Diamond Becomes a Post-Apocalyptic Farm
Dell Diamond in Round Rock Texas as it appeared for Fear the Walking Dead with no visible grass or advertising.
Now I know what the experts on AMC’s Fear the Walking Dead (spin-off from The Walking Dead) would do. They would take over the Dell Diamond, about a mile from my house!! The Dell Diamond is usually home to the Round Rock Express, Triple A affiliates of the Texas Rangers. I had never considered seeking refuge there but the open field, 15,000 seats, and luxury sky boxes surrounded by high walls and heavy gates is certainly very appealing.
It was on November 14, 2017, when Round Rock Studios, a local photography business, started the rush of Fear the Walking Dead rumors by posting this aerial drone photo on their Facebook page. The Austin Statesman ran the news story the following day, and local fans rushed to see if it were true. I went myself and spotted the muddy vehicles in the parking.
No one at the Dell Diamond would confirm the story. The filming was very confidential. The stadium was completely covered up so no one could see inside without an airplane or drone. After nearly a month of secret filming, the director of the Austin Film Commission, Brian Gannon finally confirmed Fear the Walking Dead was filming in the Austin and Round Rock area following weeks of fan speculation and photos showing a secret film set at Dell Diamond in Round Rock.
Fear the Walking Dead Reveals the Mystery
Coleman Domingo as Victor Strand and Danay Garcia as Luciana in Smithville Texas
Lennie James, who plays “Morgan” on both TV shows was hidden in a local hotel room. The producers wanted to keep his appearance secret.
According to the Austin Statesman, “One good thing about the secret being out and all of you knowing about the crossover or some sense of what the crossover is going to be is that I’m allowed to leave my hotel room. I can finally get out and see Austin and eat some of its fantastic food.”
“We are proud to further showcase the versatility of Dell Diamond alongside a great partner in AMC,” Express President Chris Almendarez said. “To have the entire ballpark transform into a television set for several months, then be ready to go for Opening Day is a testament to the great staff we have here with the Round Rock Express.”
On April 22, 2018, our long wait was over when Fear the Walking Dead Season 4, Episode 2 – “Another Day in the Diamond”, showed us what Nolan Ryan’s iconic Dell Diamond would look like during the zombie apocalypse.
The Diamond was central to the episode’s plot. The beloved baseball playing field was transformed into a well-protected farm. The luxury boxes were now makeshift apartments with laundry drying on the balcony railings.
Round Rock Express Celebrates TV Show
On May 5, the Round Rock Express will celebrate the TV show by transforming into the fictional Armadillos featured on Fear the Walking Dead. The jerseys will appear to be dirty and worn, just like the show’s characters in the post-apocalyptic setting. Both the jerseys and hats will be auctioned online during the game. The proceeds will go to the Round Rock Serving Center, a nonprofit organization that serves human needs in the Round Rock area.
Fear the Walking Dead fans can buy official Armadillo hats and t-shirts will be available online and in the Railyard Team Store, along with other unique merchandise highlighting the team’s involvement with the show.
Other local filming locations for Fear the Walking Dead included the small picturesque Smithville and southwest Travis County (just outside Austin, Texas).
I’m enjoying a game just four months after Fear the Walking Dead left the Dell Diamond in Round Rock.
Profiles in Round Rock: Ryan Crowder & Nathan Jerkins
There are numerous examples of artistic partnerships in the theatre: Audrey Hepburn and Spencer Tracy in drama; and comedy routines by the likes of Laurel and Hardy or Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin.
Round Rock has its own powerful acting partnership – Ryan Crowder and Nathan Jerkins. They first met as college students at Abilene Christian University and fate would bring them to Round Rock where Crowder and Jerkins would co-found The Penfold Theatre Company, Round Rock’s first and only professional live theatre.
Nathan Jerkins (left) and Ryan Crowder (right)
“Penfold Theatre brings Round Rock arts patrons a professional and enjoyable time at the theatre. The city is fortunate to have a group that provides theatrical entertainment,” said Scot Wilkinson, Executive Director for the Arts at the City of Round Rock. “Nathan and Ryan are both creative and bright individuals helping build the arts scene in the city.”
They almost never became a team. Ryan Crowder had moved to Ohio and was pursuing his masters degree when a mutual friend Sean Martin called. He had an idea for a theatre in Nashville, but Nathan Jerkins thought Central Texas might be better. The trio set out on a road trip across the central United States and brought home a vision for professional theatre in the growing communities in north Travis and Williamson counties. Crowder and Jerkins founded Penfold in June 2007 along with Sean Martin.
“Working with Ryan has been great,” said Jerkins. “That’s why we’re still working together for over decade. He is thoughtful and meticulous, bringing the same care to our organizational inner works as he does to our productions. We’ve been able to keep each other focused on our audience and shared vision.”
Nathan Jerkins in The Minister’s Wife
“Nathan is a visionary. He’s always bringing the big ideas to our company meetings,” said Ryan Crowder. “He had done a lot of research and discovered that Round Rock was putting together a master plan for the arts. We met with Cathy Kincaid who was leading Round Rock Arts at that time and others from the city. We decided to make Round Rock our home for the theatre.”
“Our artistic collaborations have always been built on mutual respect even when we have differences. Any show or design concept that can make us both happy is likely a solid one. It has forced each of us to make better choices knowing that we’ll have to justify them later,” Jerkins added.
In its first nine seasons, Penfold produced 29 plays and 11 special events, which together garnered 114 local awards and honors, including Austin Critics Table Award for Best Musical (two years in a row), Austin Critics Table, and B. Iden Payne Awards for Best Actor and several years in the Austin Chronicle’s Top 10 lists.
“Live theatre lets you be part of the story that is unfolding in front of you. It’s engaging. It’s emotional. It’s entertaining,” said Wilkinson.
Penfold is organized as a nonprofit dedicated to cultivating a love for live theatre by providing professional theatre performances and education programs. Their mission is to empower artists to create work of the highest caliber and to engage diverse audiences through stories that inspire and impact our community. Every year, the company offers an annual season of plays and musicals, multiple special events, a series of murder mysteries aboard the Austin Steam Train and summer camps for ages 6 to 13.
Ryan Crowder
Ryan Crowder is not only the Producing Artistic Director of the company, but an actor and director as well. In addition to his directing and performances with Penfold, Crowder has appeared in Hidden Room Theatre, Austin Shakespeare, Austin Playhouse, Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, Pittsburgh Irish & Classical Theatre and the Monomoy Theatre on Cape Cod. For his work onstage, Ryan has received the Austin Critics Table and B. Iden Payne Awards. He holds a Master of Fine Arts from the Professional Actor Training Program at Ohio University, a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Abilene Christian University along with a certificate from the Denver Center of the Performing Arts.
Nathan Jerkins
Nathan Jerkins‘ official title is Associate Artistic Director at Penfold but he’s also an actor and author. Before moving to Austin, Nathan was a founding member of the Itinerate Theatre Company, which served the Abilene and Dallas areas. Now, besides acting and directing regularly for Penfold, Nathan appears on many Austin stages – including Hidden Room Theatre, Austin Shakespeare, City Theatre and others – for which he has received multiple awards and honors. Nathan has also authored several live radio scripts, one of which is currently produced around the country. He also holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Abiline Christian University.
“Being the first has meant that we’re putting down roots in a place that didn’t have the built-in infrastructure for the arts that other places might have, “said Nathan Jerkins. “We’ve had to add the additional effort on trying to develop our audience and donor bases, but we’ve long been convinced that Round Rock’s future is worth investing in.”

What Shall We Do with the MoKan?
If you’re new to Round Rock, you probably haven’t heard about the MoKan corridor. It’s a 28-mile stretch of abandoned Missouri–Kansas–Texas Railroad tracks between Georgetown and Austin. The MoKan line runs straight through eastern Round Rock and divides Pflugerville nearly in half before reaching into the east side of downtown Austin.
On the one hand, this MoKan rail with all it’s right-of-way would make a perfect new road to ease congestion into Austin from Round Rock. It’s one of the few undeveloped open spaces left. This new road would be a much-needed alternative to I-35, Dessau Road, or the 130 toll road.
The folks in Pflugerville have other thoughts about the MoKan. They see it as dividing their community in half with a large multi-lane highway. They would like to see the MoKan become a quiet hiking and biking trail. There are benefits to this plan as well. It would provide residents from Pflugerville, Round Rock, and Georgetown with a bike path towards downtown Austin. There aren’t currently any safe options for a bike rider to cycle downtown.
Austin’s Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO) had other plans. They envisioned a light commuter train taking residents to and fro along the route to relieve traffic. This would be similar to Leander and Cedar Park’s Red Line.
Personally, I think I’m leaning towards the hiking and biking path. The route would connect nicely with our existing trail system and provide a great option for a healthy and safe bike ride into Austin.
