Juneteenth Rhythm and Ribs Festival
The Voice Inc. and the City of Round Rock Parks and Recreation Department work together to create the annual free Round Rock Juneteenth Rhythm and Ribs Festival. The 2-day event is held each year on a weekend close to the historical date of June 19th at either the Clay Madsen Center or at the Lakeview Pavilion in Old Settlers Park.
There is usually a health fair, moonwalks, clowns, games, food, retail vendors, a barbecue ribs contest, and live music.
Juneteenth is a very Texan holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the state of Texas. Historically, the celebration falls on June 19th and celebrates the day in 1865 that Texans were told by Union troops that the Civil War had ended and that all slaves were now freed. Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation became official on January 1, 1863, Texas was geographically isolated from news about the war. There was little impact on the lives of Texans until 1865.
Today, Juneteenth celebrates African American freedom while encouraging self-development and respect for all cultures. For more specific information about this year’s Juneteenth, visit the City of Round Rock’s website.
